Hindi and Urdu

Hindi is spoken as a mother tongue by more than five hundred million people in the world. Alongside English, Hindi is the official language of India and is therefore learned as a second language. Some 190 million people speak Hindi as a second language or a foreign language learned in school. Hindi contains many literary words from Sanskrit, but differs greatly from the ancient Indian languages of Sanskrit and Pali in its grammar. Hindi is written in Devanagari and is a language full of local dialects. Hindi has a so-called twin language: Urdu. When a person speaking Hindi and another Urdu converse, they have no problems understanding one another. Yet there are differences: Urdu has a large number of Arabic and Persian words and is also written with Arabic characters. Originally, the name Hindi came from merchants and ambassadors who were referring to the language spoken in the North of India. Hindi came into existence after the turn of the tenth century. Hindi nowadays

Just like any modern language, Hindi has changed as time has progressed. Especially after India gained independence, the language experienced a modernization mainly consisting of standardizations. The language is made up of 46 phonemes which are distinguished by vowels, stop consonants, and nasal consonants. In contrast to the traditional Indian languages, Hindi only embodies 3 cases. Verbs are interestingly enough always found at the end of the sentence and tend to be in compound forms with two or more helping verbs. Missing cases are replaced by using various prepositions and because of all these changes Hindi is not an inflected language. Presently, it is considered to be the official language of the Indian Union and its common means of communication. Hindi’s popularity is even increasing in European regions which has a lot to do with the popularity of Bollywood films. Translations into and from this language are steadily increasing in demand.
