A world language
Russian is very closely related to Belorussian and Ukrainian. It is written using the Cyrillic alphabet but takes on its own Russian-specific form of appearance. Today, more and more experts are beginning to study and occupy themselves with so-called Russian studies. Of the 160 million people who speak Russian as their native tongue, 130 million live in Russia. Around 26 million people live in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), as well as in the Baltic States and the former Soviet Union. The approximate 7 million people remaining live in other countries, predominantly Germany, Israel, and the United States.

The history
The Russian language stems from the common Old East Slavic language, which was spoken by the Kievan Rus and its successors. The Ruthenian language arose in the Middle Ages and played a significant role in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; however, in contrast to Ruthenian, Russian was largely influenced by the Church Slavic liturgical language. In the eighteenth century, the Russian language underwent a reform, implemented by the writers Michail Lomonossow, Antioch Kantemir, and Wassil Trediakowski. After the fall of the Third Reich and the end of the Second World War, Russian came to be known as a new European language and experienced a boom in popularity. Russian was also taught in schools as a second language. Do you have a Russian language text that you would like translated into one of the 150 languages we offer?
