Professional Bosnian translations by the translation agency Fasttranslator

The Bosnian language is spoken in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as in parts of Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Macedonia. It is an Indo-European language and more specifically a South Slavic language. Just like Croatian and Serbian, Bosnian is based on a Shtokavian dialect. It is the official language of Bosnia-Herzegovina and is spoken by about 2.5 million people. Bosnian is written using the Latin alphabet, although a Cyrillic alphabet rendition is also possible. There is an extreme similarity to both Croatian and Serbian. All Bosnian speakers can easily communicate with people speaking Croatian and Serbian. For this reason, linguists dispute whether or not Bosnian really is its own language or nothing more than a variant of Serbo-Croatian. However, the term "Bosnian" is employed internationally and is also used in official treaties such as the Dayton Agreement.

Bosnian orthography and vocabulary

The way Bosnian words are spelled is very similar to Croatian and Serbian. Differences are found when using the future tense. Some words, mainly those of Arabic or Turkish origin, are entirely different. Bosnian month names are similar to those in German while the Croatian terms for months are derived from the Old Slavonic names for the years.

We are glad to be of service by enabling you to communicate in correct Bosnian with your customers, business partners, or friends in Bosnia and Herzegovina without the confusion of diversifying the Slavic languages. Contact our experienced project managers!

The Bosnian alphabet and grammar

The Bosnian language has seven grammatical cases: Nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, vocative, locative, and instrumental. Bosnian grammar only has a few variations from Serbian and Croatian. The Bosnian language differentiates itself grammatically from Croatian mostly through the use of infinitive constructions and with differences in numerals.

Unlike in English, the Bosnian alphabet contains 30 different characters. The additional letters are: č, ć, dž, đ, lj, nj, š, and ž. The letters q, w, x, y are not used in the Bosnian language. The letters are almost always pronounced the same as in German.
