Professional Lithuanian translations by the translation agency Fasttranslator
The history of Lithuanian
The oldest written records of Lithuanian date back to the early sixteenth century and were followed by a large number of translated religious texts. Near the end of the nineteenth century, printing Lithuanian books in Latin script was banned for about a 30 year period. At this time, only the Cyrillic alphabet could be used to print. During the ban, individuals known as book carriers smuggled books from neighboring East Prussia. Nowadays, Lithuanian is one of the official languages of the EU and is spoken by more than three million people. The process of standardizing the Lithuanian language typically involved transliterating foreign loanwords and proper nouns into Lithuanian. For example, in Lithuanian, George Bush becomes „Džordžas Bušas“ and Harry Potter becomes, “Haris Poteris”.
