Translation of XML files with embedded rich text format (RTF)
Not every file can be translated immediately and easily. A few technical requirements must be met in order for a translation to be completed professionally and accurately. The translator, therefore, utilizes what are called CAT Tools, an example of which would be the translation software, Trados. The files to be translated are uploaded to a program of this kind and then are shown separated into text segments. The translator then translates these segments one by one. One advantage of this process is the consistent translation of repeating text segments. However, not every file format is compatible with CAT tools like Trados. This is also the case for Lectora e-Learnings which come as XML files embedded with RTF files or snippets. RTF files can be processed in Trados as long as they are prepared appropriately, but not in an embedded format within an XML file.
In-house solution for smooth translating
As a basic principle, XML files must be prepared in order for them to be processed in Trados. However, Lectora e-Learnings are especially challenging because they contain embedded RTF files. In order for us to translate Lectora e-learnings, we have developed a Perl tool, which is used to export the embedded RTF files into separate segments to be translated separately. Then they are imported back into the XML files of the e-Learnings. Thanks to this, your translation will be precise and in the right place.
