Many still argue today that Valencian should be considered its own language. Yet because vocabulary and pronunciation vary from place to place, dissociating Valencian from Catalan is impossible. The Catalan language is more commonly referred to in the Valencia region. Some aspects of Valencian contain certain unique features, namely its vocabulary and grammar. The loss of independence and the Franco dictatorship

The War of the Spanish succession cost Catalonia its independence and drove the Spanish state to its present form. Spanish was declared the official language of this state, causing Catalan and Valencian to wane in importance.

The language experienced another boom from the nineteenth century up to the early days of the Franco dictatorship when it began to be suppressed. Only after the death of Franco did the language go undergo another upswing, but it had lost much importance.
